M R Products was recently approved for the apprenticeship program through the U.S. Department of Labor. Our first candidate for the program is Wayne Crawford who was hired in May 2017 as a machine operator. Wayne was chosen as our first apprenticeship candidate because of his positive attitude, his mechanical interests and abilities, and his great work habits.

Wayne has been a part of the community in Benzonia all his life. He and his wife, Nicole, were high school sweethearts. They were married September 20, 2014 and remained in the area. They are busy raising five miniature dachshunds. Wayne likes to hunt, fish, trap, and go camping on his father-in-law’s property in Bendon or his property in the U.P. He has one older brother.

Wayne is thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the apprenticeship program, for advancement in his job, and to further his education as it relates to his job at M R Products. He enjoys the variety in his work throughout the day and being able to move around learning, assisting and performing the different job duties. Wayne knew he wanted to further his education but he did not have any guidance or direction as to how to accomplish this or even what area of schooling or work he wanted to go into. He had taken some welding classes at NMC but knew that welding was not something he wanted to do as a full-time job.

He currently has online classes on Mondays and Fridays and has received an 'A' in the classes he has completed. To supplement his studies, Wayne is working as a foreman's assistant on the first shift. His mentor for two-year apprenticeship program is the General Foreman, Josh Foster. Please see our Blog of Wednesday, October 25, 2017, for additional information on the apprenticeship program.
